The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games are in full swing and in the last part of this sporting event it is time for paracanoeing competitions. Over three competition days, European paracanoeists will be among the main favourites for the medals.
100 paracanoeists from 30 nations will compete for the medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games from Friday until Sunday at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. This is the third time paracanoeing features in the Paralympic Games, following the debut in Rio de Janeiro and success at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Now, the athletes will compete in ten events, five men’s and five women’s, to ensure gender equality with 50 male and 50 female athletes at the start. There are six nations making paracanoeing debut at the Games, among them Serbia, while others debutants come from Algeria, Egypt, South Korea, Senegal and Thailand.
European paracanoeing will be the main contenders for the medals, including local favourites Nelia Barbossa and Remy Boulle. The biggest team is British with strong names such as Emma Wiggs, Charlotte Henshaw, Laura Sugar, Jeanette Chippington, David Phillipson, Hope Gordon ... Hungarian team will be led by Peter Pal Kiss, who became Paralympic Champion in Tokyo at the age of 18, and Katalin Varga, Portugal’s favourite is Norberto Mourao, Spain is in Paris with a strong team, including Juan Antonio Valle, the 2024 World Champion, not to miss out are athletes from Ukraine, Italy, Austria, Germany and Poland.
The first competition day is Friday, when the heats are on the programme. On Saturday, first five sets of medals will be awarded to the best in men’s KL1, KL2 and KL3 200 metres events as well as in women’s VL2 and VL3 200 metres events. On Sunday, the athletes will fight for the medals in women’s KL1, KL2 and KL3 200 metres events and men in VL2 and VL3 200 metres events.
