Rachel Cawthorn Schofield retired from competitive canoe sprint

Rachel Cawthorn Schofield retired from competitive canoe sprint 1.12.2019

British sprint kayaker Rachel Schofield (nee Cawthorn) has announced her retirement from competitive sport earlier this year at the age of 30. During her career she won five medals at senior European Championships and two medals at senior World Championships.

She started her career at the age of 15 after a chance assembly at school which led to her being talent spotted. She joined Wey Kayak Club and quickly progressed. She made her first international appearance in 2007. During her career she won 19 international medals and was also the first British female paddler in 2010 who won medal at both the European and World Championships.
She won two bronze medals at Senior World Championships. In 2010 in Poznan she finished third in K1 500 metres event and in 2017 she picked up bronze in K1 1000 metres event. She was 2010 European Champion in K1 1000 metres and finished third four times at European Championships (2009 K1 500m; 2009 K4 200m; 2010 K1 500m; 2017 K1 1000m).
“I always knew it was going to be hard to know when to stop and when to make that call because I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving the sport. I don’t have any intention to stop canoeing, for me it’s more of a change in focus. Racing at Eton Dorney at the London 2012 Olympic Games was a once in a lifetime, amazing experience, right from the opening ceremony, being part of Team GB and then racing in the finals.  But I think the thing I will look back on and cherish will be the day to day training with such a good group of girls and guys. It’s been really cool to have Jonnie involved in the sport. To have my husband training alongside me, it’s been great,” she said.
