Six candidates for Spanish K4

Six candidates for Spanish K4 1.3.2020

All focus of elite athletes this year is on Tokyo Olympic Games. Spanish Federation has announced the selection process for the K4 crew which will be among the main favourites for the medals at the Olympic Games.

There are six candidates for the elite boat among which the best four will be chosen. These paddlers are Saúl Craviotto, Carlos Arévalo, Marcus Cooper Walz, Rodrigo Germade, Carlos Garrote and Cristian Toro.

The selection process includes individual controls and a subsequent duel between two K4 boats, whose winner will compete at the First World Cup race early in May.

The classification criteria established by the Royal Spanish Canoe Federation includes four phases to determine the representation of the men's national team in the K4 500 and K1 200 tests.

The first phase began in January in Seville with periodic trainings to prepare different crews; the second sees individual controls to form combinations for K4 500 metres; the third affects the qualification for the Olympics, and the fourth includes the period from the first World Cup to the Olympic Games.

The selection process foresees individual selection where top two ranked paddlers from K1 200 meters will be selected, the first one from the K1 400 metres and the fourth will be proposed by the K4 coach, while the second option is that they will be selected among those who were in the 2019 crew, provided that Craviotto, Arévalo, Cooper and Germade are classified among the top five of the average between K1 200 and K1 400 metres events. Otherwise the control will be carried out with the first 4 of the average of the K1 200 and K1 400.

If the K4 500 will not win a medal at the first World Cup, the technical commission does not rule out a new selection process.
