Skopje hosted the first ECA Wildwater Sprint Canoeing European Cup race in 2023 8.4.2023

Skopje, North Macedonia, hosted the first ECA Wildwater Sprint Canoeing European Cup race of the season 2023. Wins in the five final events went to five different countries.


The venue which will host the 2023 ECA Wildwater Canoeing European Championships this May had a good test before the upcoming European Championships. Athletes from six European countries took part in the first ECA Wildwater Sprint Canoeing European Cup race of the year and tested the Treska River.
 
Irish kayaker Odhran McNally took the win in men’s kayak sprint final after stopping the clock at 43.09. McNally produced a 0.03 seconds slower time than Dušan Mačkić in the heats where he was the fastest. In the heats McNally finished second, but managed to beat the winner of the heats Mačkić from Bosnia and Herzegovina for 0.12 seconds in the decisive run. Serbian kayaker Marko Marjanović was third both in the heats as well as in the final.
 
Serbia took the win in men’s canoe final thanks to Pavle Zdravković, who improved his heats run by 0.05 seconds in the final for a confident win ahead of Croatian canoeist Tomislav Hohnjec, who was 2.19 seconds behind. Bronze medal also went to Croatia, as Janko Presečki produced the third fastest time of men’s canoe final.
 
Ivana Valentić from Bosnia and Herzegovina won in women’s kayak final.She was 5.28 seconds faster than Greek paddler Ariadne-Aphrodite Kollia in second place, while third place also went to Greece thanks to Georgia Mourou, who was 7.22 seconds behind Valentić. Georgia Morou was the winner of women’s canoe final, where her colleague from Greek team Paraskevi Tzini took the second place.
 
In men’s C2 final Croatian duo Tomislav Hohnjec – Janko Presečki won ahead of Serbian crew Pavle Zdravković – Zoran Krumov (+5.41). Ioannis Zachos and Kiriakos Dermatis from Greece were third (+8.16).
 
The next race in the 2023 ECA Wildwater Sprint Canoeing European Cup series will be organised next Friday on the Kolpa River, on the border between Slovenia and Croatia.
