Slovak Canoeing awarded the best athletes of the season 2021

Slovak Canoeing awarded the best athletes of the season 2021 17.4.2022

The season 2021 was a memorable one for one of the best European Canoe Federations in history. Slovak Canoeing held a ceremony to remember all the successes and to award those stars who shone the brightest in the past season.

Olympic Games silver medallist Jakub Grigar received the highest amount of votes in the poll and was named white-water Slovak paddler of the year. 24-year-old kayaker said, “It's a great honour for me, because I've been watching our best athletes since I was a child and I was lucky that I could grow up next to them and I always wanted to be able to stand next to them and get such an award, so I'm very happy that after 15 years I succeeded.”

His major goal for the upcoming season is European Championships in his home town in Liptovsky Mikulaš which is just a little over a month away. “It is the biggest peak of the season for me, because you always want to show yourself in good light in front of the closest fans. My other ambitions remain the same as every year. Demonstrating nice runs at top events and hoping that some precious metal will fall out of it.”

The best athlete of the year in flatwater was Erik Vlček, 4-times Olympic medallist, who won bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics in K4 together with Samuel Balaž, Denis Myšak and Adam Botek.

Peter Nagy, who passed away last December, was posthumously introduced to the Hall of Fame. He was a member of Slovak (and Czechoslovak national team prior to that) canoe slalom national team from 1990 to 2001 and represented Slovakia in Kayak at 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
