Slovak paddlers among the best in annual athlete of the year awards 20.12.2022

It is no secret canoeing is one of the most successful sports in Slovakia with Olympic, World and European Championships medallists. Slovak K4 crew finished the polling of the best team of the year in third position.

Samuel Balaz, Denis Mysak, Csaba Zalka and Adam Botek were silver medallists of the Munich 2022 European Championships in men’s K4 500 metres event, and were just outside the podium at World Championships in Canada, finishing behind Spain, Germany and Ukraine. This earned them third position in the Slovak athlete of the year awards.

115 sports journalists and members of the Club of Sports Editors voted in the poll. 45 individuals and 12 teams received votes.

Ahead of Slovak K4 was the national ice hockey team and Slovan Bratislava Football team. Men’s C1 canoe slalom team was 5th and women’s C1 team 7th.

In the polling of individual athletes canoe slalom paddler Alexander Slafkovsky finished seventh thanks to his silver medal from World Championships.
