Spain hosted Ocean Racing World Cup race 9.2.2020

Lanzarote, the northernmost and easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands, hosted this year’s Ocean Racing World Cup race as a part of the traditional Atlantic Ocean race celebrated at this island. The host nation picked up three medals, including gold thanks to Judith Verges who won in women’s category.


Over 300 athletes from 19 countries took part in this year’s competition which consisted of three stages of 17, 10 and 13 kilometres long courses which summed up a total of 40 kilometres challenge.
 
Judith Verges, silver medallist of the 2018 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships in Villajoyosa, picked up a win in women’s category of the Ocean Racing World Cup that was held this weekend in Canary Islands. She finished the race in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 48 seconds. Amaya Osaba, bronze medallist of the 2018 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships, was second and Chloe Bunnet third.
 
In the men’s event Southafrican Joshua Fenn, regning U23 ocean racing World Champion, recorded a win a head of German representative and medallist of the 2018 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships Gordan Harbrecht and reigning World Champion Sean Rice (also from South Africa). Biggest Spanish hopeful for the medal and reigning European Champion Esteban Media just missed the podium and was fourth.
