The artificial channel in Pau hosted the Pyrenees Cup canoe slalom race, which is also the first race of the season 2023 that counts for the 2023 ECA Open Canoe Slalom European Cup. Spain took the wins in three out of four events thanks to Maialen Chourraut, David Llorente and Miquel Trave. Gabriela Satkova was the best in women’s canoe.
The final day of the Pyrenees Cup in Pau, France, brought semifinal and final races where Spanish athletes dominated in majority of the events. Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallist Maialen Chourraut had to go the second heats run on Saturday to secure a spot in Sunday’s semifinal, and it appears this motivated her even more. 40-year-old kayaker was sixth after the semifinal run and in the decisive run of the day she showed all her knowledge and experience to take the win ahead of Polish representative Klaudia Zwolinska. French kayaker Marie-Zelia Lafont was third.
David Llorente, the 2019 World Championships silver medallist, was the fastest in men’s kayak final, finishing the race 0.81 seconds ahead of French paddler Benjamin Renia. Young Spanish kayaker Pau Echaniz was third.
In the third final of the day Spain saw third vicgory of their athlete. Miquel Trave was a little less than a second faster than Pierre-Antoine Tillard from France, while Polish canoeist Kacper Sztuba occupied third position.
In women’s canoe final Czech paddlers dominated the event, taking all three podium positions. The 2020 European Champion in this event Gabriela Satkova took the win with three seconds advantage despite the four seconds penalties she picked up on her way down the course. Tereza Fiserova was second, while Martina Satkova finished third.
