Steffi Kriegerstein and Tom Liebscher athletes of the year in Dresden 10.4.2018

We are already used that German paddlers are frequently in the spotlight of Gala evenings, organised in honour of sporting successes of German athletes. It was no different this time in Dresden. German canoe sprinters Steffi Kriegerstein and Tom Liebscher received the awards for best female and male athlete in Dresden at the 26th annual gala evening. Jens Kühn received an award for the coach of the year.


Members of German canoe sprint national team received the awards in front of about 1000 spectators who attended the gala evening. Both Steffi Kriegerstein and Tom Liebscher were named the best in Dresden also last year.
 
25-year-old Steffi Kriegerstein received a title Sportswoman of the year award thanks to her silver medal at the 2017 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Czech Republic in women’s K4 500 metres event. A year younger Tom Liebscher was also a medallist of this World Championships, picking up two gold medals. He won the World Champion title in men’s K1 1000 metres final and celebrated another gold medal with his teammates in men’s K4 500 meters event.
 
Both athletes are protégées of Jens Kühn, who takes care of them in their base in Dresden. Kühn was named best coach of the year 2017. They were not the only canoeists who were among the best. Jakob Kurschat occupied the second position in the young hopes category and Benedict Bachmann finished fourth in the Sportsman of the year category.
