Swiss and German celebration in Basel

Swiss and German celebration in Basel 19.3.2019

Basel hosted international canoe slalom world ranking race with Swiss and German athletes taking majority of the medals. Among the best paddlers were medallists of Junior, U23 and senior canoe slalom European Championships in the past seasons.

It was a very tight win for Swiss kayaker Martin Dougoud in men’s K1 final. He was only 0,02 seconds faster than his teammate Lukas Werro, while German paddler Stefan Hengst picked up bronze medal in Basel. The 2017 European Championships silver medallist Thomas Koechlin (SUI) won in men’s C1 event ahead of Italian representative Stefano Cipressi and French canoeist Thibault Blaise.

Wins in both women’s events went to Germany. Lena Stoecklin, 2011 European Championships medallist, was the fastest in C1 event. Andrea Herzog and Zoe Jakob (both Germany) joined her on the winner’s podium. In kayak final Anna Faber, last year’s U23 vice-European Champion in Bratislava, won the race ahead of compatriot Franziska Hanke and Swiss paddler Naemi Braendle. In mixed C2 race Gottowick – Piontek (GER) won the race, French duo Budzinski – Blaise was second, while Italians Cerrano –Piatti won third place.
