From Hungary comes another sad news. Legendary canoe sprinter Tamás Wichmann passed away at the age of 72 after an illness. In his sporting career he won three Olympic medals and 18 medals at World Championships.


Tamás Wichmann competed from 1966 to 1983. He participated in four Summer Olympic Games where he won three medals. This included two silver (C1 1000m in 1972, C2 1000m in 1968) and one bronze medal (C1 1000m in 1976).
 
He additionally won 18 medals at World Championships, nine of which were gold (C1 1000m in 1979, C1 10000m in 1970, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1982, C2 1000m in 1971). He added four silver medals (C1 500m in 1971, C1 1000m in 1966 and 1978, C2 1000m in 1970), and five bronze medals (C1 1000m in 1973 and 1975, C1 10000m in 1973 and 1983, C2 1000m in 1973) to his collection.
 
He was named Hungarian Sportsman of the year in 1979 after winning two gold medals at that year's World Championships. He also holds the record of most national champion titles won in canoe. He won Hungarian championships 37 times. In January 2020 at the Athlete of the Year Gala Tamás Wichmann received the Lifetime achievement Award of the Hungarian Sports Journalist Association and the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
