The first races of the 2021 ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in Poznan will start on Thursday morning and exciting racing will continue until Sunday afternoon when the last races - the 5000 metres events - are scheduled to take place on the Malta Lake.
The paracanoe athletes will contest the 200 metres distance, while canoe sprint part of the championships will feature the usual 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 metres events.
In the paracanoe part of the Championships participants from 13 European countries will fight for the medals, with majority of the Europe's best on the start line present. However, the first favourites - British Paracanoe team - will be missing at this continental championships. Medallists of the past championships, such as Serhii Yemelianov, Markus Swoboda, Nelia Barbosa, Federico Mancarella, Mykola Syniuk, Katarzyna Kozikowska are all on the startlist and ready to expand their medals collection.
In the Canoe Sprint European Championships, the first one after the 2018 Belgrade Europeans (in 2019 European Games were held and in 2020 the championships was cancelled), athletes from 35 countries will compete. Majority of the teams came to Poland with their strongest weapons. The locals will compete at their home course with their A-team, the same as France, Germany, Belarus, Russia, Hungary, Ukraine ... Spain left their Olympians at home, but their squad still includes names that are medal contenders.
Fernando Pimenta, Marta Walczykiewicz, Liam Heath, Maxime Beaumont, Danuta Kozak, Martin Fuksa, Sebastian Brendel, Volha Khudzenka, Maryna Litvinchuk, Tina Dietze and Sabrina Pradler, Emma Jorgensen ... are just a few of the star names featured on the entry list.
Poznan took over the organisation of this year's ECA Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe European Championships in the last minute, after Duisburg had to cancel the organisation due to Covid-19 restrictions and disapproval of the city that did not give a green light for the organisation of such a big event in current health situation.
