The ECA Board of Directors meeting in Budapest

The ECA Board of Directors meeting in Budapest 5.11.2017

Hungary hosted the last ECA Board of Directors meeting in the year 2017. The governing body of the European Canoe Association evaluated the season 2017 and also looked forward to the upcoming years. They have also set the final dates of the 2018 European Championships.

The canoeing season 2017 has just finished, but the plans for the following season, when ECA will celebrate the 25th anniversary, are already in full swing. The ECA’s Board of Directors revised the reports of the technical delegates of respective disciplines of the European Championships and EYOF in the season 2017 and already talked about the future. The decision was made that the 2018 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom European Championships and the 2018 ECA Canoe Freestyle European Championships will be organised in the same period in Bratislava, Slovakia. The 2018 ECA Ocean Racing remains vacant for the moment as deadline for applications is opened until the end of November 2017.

Since Minsk will host the 2019 European Games and Canoe Sprint will be part of the programme Senior Canoe Sprint European Championships will not be organised in 2019. Twelve Olympic Canoe sprint events will be part of the European Games. With 2019 ECA Canoe Sprint European Championships not being organised due to the games in Minsk, the idea is to add the Paracanoeing European Championships to the Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships which will be held in Račice, Czech Republic.

The Board of Directors also discussed the received bids for the organisation of the 2020 ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships. Following the venue visit of the canoe sprint technical delegate Elly Müller it was decided that the organisation of this championships will be given to Ottensheim/Linz, Austria.

During the meeting it has also been established that the ECA will follow the ICF’s programme of events at Canoe Sprint European Championships and will not add or remove some of the events in Junior or U23 categories.

Another major issue to discuss was the received bids for the IT Support of the ECA Canoe Sprint European Championships. The Board of Directors members thoroughly revised the received bids, but have not yet finally closed the deal with one of the three candidates.

During the meeting it was decided that the results of the 2016 ECA Canoe Sprint European Championships in Moscow need to be changed and updated after the Hungarian paddler Bence Dombvary failed a doping test.

The Board of Directors members have also been informed about the TV rights situation, media activities and 'Amazing European Canoeing and Amazing Europe in Canoe' marketing project proposal, development programmes etc.

Edwin Jakob, newly appointed technical delegate for touring, presented the ideas for the future and development of touring and recreational canoeing within Europe.

The next ECA Board of Directors meeting will be held in March 2018 in Madrid, Spain.
