The First Highlight of the European Canoeing Season is Just around the Corner

The excitement is building ahead of the start of the international season of major canoe slalom competitions. On Wednesday, the 2025 ECA Canoe Slalom European Championships will kick off on the Olympic course in Paris – the first of this year’s ECA European Championships.

The European Canoe Association continues the tradition of carrying forward the Olympic legacy, and this year’s first major canoeing event under the ECA auspices will take place at the venue of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The competition on the outskirts of Paris is expected to be intense, as the strongest national teams are arriving with full squads, including their top athletes – with only a few top athletes absent this season due to pregnancy or injury.

Athletes from 30 countries will be on the start line, including numerous medallists from World and European Championships as well as the Olympic Games. Just to name a few of the sport’s biggest names: Michal Martikan, who qualified for the Slovak national team at the age of 46, Matej Benus, Jiri Prskavec, Giovanni de Gennaro, Ricarda Funk, Joseph Clarke, Klaudia Zwolinska, Benjamin Savsek, Peter Kauzer, Gabriela Satkova, Nicolas Gestin, Titouan Castryck, Maialen Chourraut, Kimberley Woods, Mario Leitner, Stefanie Horn, Mateusz Polaczyk, Hannes Aigner, Monica Doria Vilarrubla, Ziga Lin Hocevar, Pau Echaniz, Miquel Trave, Camille Prigent, Ryan Westley, Angele Hug, Zuzana Pankova...

The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, with the first sets of medals to be awarded on Thursday in the team events. On Friday, the individual heats will follow, while Saturday will host the semifinals and finals in kayak and canoe. The format has changed slightly compared to previous years: there will only be one heats run, with the top 30 paddlers advancing to the semifinals, and the top 12 from there moving on to the finals.

On Sunday, the kayak cross individual and kayak cross (elimination phases) events will take place, progressing through heats, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.

Participating countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkiye, Ukraine, AIN
