The largest paddling marathon in the world – Vohandu Marathon – sees a record number of participants 15.4.2025

The upcoming weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the Võhandu Marathon, with more than 3200 paddlers registered in 1415 boats, representing 30 different countries.

The event brings together elite athletes and passionate amateurs alike, all eager to take on a 100-kilometer challenge that can last up to 24 hours — along the breathtaking Võhandu River in Southern Estonia.

The race starts early Saturday morning, 19th April, on Lake Tamula in the town of Võru. Participants will face a demanding 100 km journey that includes at least four portages of 200–400 meters, numerous rapids, and several historic mill dams — all set against the backdrop of beautiful natural landscapes.

Throughout the marathon’s 19-year history, the finish rate has remained impressively high — over 86%. As the official marathon website says: “It’s everyone’s story of the river – of beauty and pain, struggle and joy.” Every finisher earns a proudly worn medal and the right to say: “I paddled the whole river in one day!”

This year’s weather forecast looks especially favourable for both athletes and support crews, even though the river level is lower than usual. Exciting competition is expected for the overall victory, with strong teams arriving from Lithuania, Finland, Czechia, France, Sweden, Poland, and Denmark.
