Tom Liebscher wins at European Universities Games in Portugal 23.7.2018

Coimbra, the fourth-largest urban centre in Portugal (after Lisbon, Porto, Braga), hosted the 2018 European Universities Games and part of the Games was also canoe sprint competition. There were some familiar names, medallists from Olympic Games, World and European Championships, taking part in the competition. The most famous name on the start list was Tom Liebscher.


 
24-year-old German kayaker Tom Liebscher, student of Technical University of Dresden (GER), was the main favourite in men’s 1000 metres event. The 2017 K1M 1000 metres World Champion and 2016 Rio Olympic gold medallist in K4 1000 metres event did not let any surprise to happen and crossed the finish line first to celebrate the European University Champion title. David Varela from University of Coimbra (POR) was second and Felix Landes from University of Mannheim (GER) was third.
 
In men’s C1 1000 metres final gold medal went to Belarussian State University of Physical Education, Bruno Afonso from University of Coimbra was second and Joosep Karlson from University of Tartu (EST) was third.
 
Sarah Bruessler from University of Mannheim was the fastest paddler in women’s K1 500 meters event. Her compatriot Melanie Gebhard, paddling for the University of Leipzig, was second and Noemi Eszter Horvath from the University of Physical Education (HUN) was third.
 
In women’s canoe in the 500 meters distance Iryna Vikhruk from Mozyr State Pedagogical University named after I.P. Shamyakin (BLR) crossed the finish line in front of Raquel Da Costa Pineiro from the University of Vigo (ESP) and Johanna Handrick from the University of Liepzig (GER).
 
Felix Landes who was third in the 1000 metres final won in the 200 metres final in front of Nicolas Boursier from Paris-Est Creteil Val-de-Marne University (FRA) and Mark Kovacs from Szent Istvan University (HUN).
 
In women’s K1 200 metres final local favourite Francisca Laia from the University of Coimbra celebrated the title in front of Rymma Skaryna from Belarussian State University of Physical Education and Melanie Gebhardt from the University of Leipzig.
 
The 2018 C1M 200 metres European Championships medallist Zaza Nadiradze, paddling for the Georgian Technical University (GEO), won the race. He was followed by Mikita Miarhuryeu from the Belarussian State University of Physical Education and David Novas Bonet from the University of Vigo.
 
Iryna Vikhruk won her second gold medal of the Games in the 200 metres distance in women’s C1 in front of her University colleague Natallia Trukhanovich (both paddling for Mozyr State Pedagogical University named after I.P. Shamyakin) and Raquel Da Costa Pineiro from the University of Vigo.
 
In the K2 mix 200 metres event Francisca Laia and David Varela (University of Coimbra) celebrated in front of Sarah Bruessler and Felix Landes (University of Mannheim) and Hugo Figuiras and Sara Batalha Sotero (University of Coimbra). There was one more set of medals awarded and it was 500 metres K1 mixed relay. Laia and Varela were the best in this event too, Bruessler and Landes were second while Uladzislau Belaus and Volha Chehayeva (Mozyr State Pedagogical University named after I.P. Shamyakin) were third.
