Ukrainian canoeing mourns death of federation’s vice-president 4.12.2023

Canoe Federation of Ukraine announced passing of Vyacheslav Petrovych Nikolaev, vice-president of the federation and Honoured coach of Ukraine, who passed away at the age of 60.


Vyacheslav Petrovych Nikolaev was born on 9th July 1963 in Mykolaiv and graduated from Mykolaiv Pedagogical Institute (1985). From 1990 to 2010 he worked as a coach in the Dynamo sports association; from 2010 to 2015 he acted as director of the Atlant Comprehensive Youth Educational Institution; and since 2015 he was a coach of the School of Higher Sports Mastery (all in Mykolaiv).
 
Among his protégées was Maksym Prokopenko who competed for Ukraine and after the 2008 Olympic Games for Azerbaijan. Competing for Ukraine, Prokopenko was the C1 500 m silver medallist at the 2002 Junior European Championships in Zagreb. He won a bronze medal in the C2 1000 m event at the 2006 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Szeged. Competing in two Summer Olympics also for Ukraine, Prokopenko earned his best finish of eighth in the C-2 500 m event at Beijing in 2008.
 
Vyacheslav Nikolaev was twice elected vice-president of the Canoe Federation of Ukraine.
