VIDEO – Lithuanian Canoe Sprint National Championships 7.8.2020

Three days of exciting racing in Trakai, Lithuania, gave the answers who are the best national competitors in the season 2020. During the weekend 31 sets of medals have been awarded.

“In the last five years, it was very difficult to predict Lithuanian championship. There are a lot of unexpected results, a lot of distances, where the champions are decided in the last metres and the winner was determined by only a few hundredths of a second,” said Aleksandras Alekrinskis, the president of Lithuanian Canoe Federation. In the men’s K1 200 metres event it was Ignas Navakauskas who reached the top podium position for the first time in four years. Arturas Seja, who celebrated in the past three years, finished the final in second place, 0.14 seconds behind the winner. Mindaugas Maldonis was third. “I finally won! I am very happy, I have proved to myself and others that I can win. Although I have already started to be "written off" as a 30-year-old. I started very well and didn’t make mistakes the whole distance. There is such a persistent struggle between me and Arturas that the winner is determined by the details. Whoever wins in Lithuania also records a good result at World or European Championships,” said Navakauskas.

Henrikas Žustautas had an incredible winning streak at National Championships. He won impressive seven gold and two silver medals during the weekend. “Last year I won 6 gold medals, and this year I improved my record. Although the 200 metre distance for singles has become non-Olympic, we still consider it prestigious as many of the world’s best canoeists continue to compete in it. I have not lost this race in Lithuania since 2015, when I defeated Yevgeny Shuklin. I wanted to continue that series of victories. The atmosphere on the shore, where a large number of spectators gathered, was the most gratifying. We also want the support of our fans like in the basketball arenas. And today was something like during a basketball game. We are glad that our sport is becoming more popular,” said Žustautas.

Gintare Pališauskaite won 5 gold medals in the women's competition. In the 200 metres distance she won gold and 2 silver medals; Ieva Vaitiekunaite won 3 gold medals in the Lithuanian championships and Gabriele Čerepokaitė was unbeatable in the canoe singles competition.
