WHO TO WATCH - 2024 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships 13.4.2024

With the temperature before the start of the 2024 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships in Azores rising, let's take a look at the athletes who excelled at the previous ocean racing competitions.


JUDIT VERGES XIFRA (ESP) - The first favourite for the European Champion title in women's SS1 event. She is chasing her third consecutive European Champion title (following wins in 2021 and 2022). In addition she was second in 2018 at European Championships in Villajoyosa.
 
 
CHLOE BUNNETT (ESP) - Competed in all editions of the ECA Ocean racing European Championships, since its debut in 2014. She won bronze medal in the first edition in 2014 and was second in 2021 and 2022.
 
 
SARA RAFAEL (POR) - She was a medallist of the first ECA Ocean racing European Championships in history in 2014 which was also held in Portugal. In the meantime, she became a mother of two, so she did not compete at the highest international level at the last three editions.
 
 
SARA SOTERO (POR) - She finished 4th at the World Championships in 2022 in the U23 event. She was also 4th at the Mediterranean Games in Greece in 2023. This is her first participation at the Ocean racing European Championships.
 
 
ROSEMARY EDWARDS (GBR) - She won bronze medal in U23 event of the 2022 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships in Cagliari. She was second in junior event of the 2021 ECA Ocean Racing European Championships in France.
 
SARA MENGUAL (ESP) - Second at the World Championships in 2023 in the SS2 event with Jorge Enriquez.
 
 
THAIS DELRIEUX (FRA) - Second at the 2022 European Championships in U23 event. Second at the Mediterranean Games in 2023.
 
 
LARA CELLIER (ESP) - Second at the World Championships in SS1 and SS2 with Enrique Garcia.
 
 
BERNARDO PEREIRA (POR) - Portuguese's biggest hope for the medal. Defending champion in men's U23 SS1 event from 2022 European Championships in Cagliari. At the age of 15 he won his first medal in junior event at the European Championships in Villajoyosa in 2018, when he finished third. In 2021, he was crowned World and European Junior Champion. In 2022, in addition to the U23 European Champion title, he won the bronze medal in U23 event of the World Championships. In 2023, he was third in U23 event of the World Championships.
 
 
WALTER BOUZAN (ESP) - Winner of the Open category at European Championships in 2016 and 2021. reigning World Champion in SS2 with Judit Verges. He won several medals, including gold ones, at the Canoe Marathon European and World Championships.
 
 
ESTEBAN MEDINA (ESP) - 2018 European Champion in SS1 in Villajoyosa. he won bronze medal at the 2021 European Championships in Cherbourg.
 
 
HECTOR HENOT (FRA) - Bronze medal in the 2022 edition of the European Championships in Cagliari in the U23 event. Silver medal at the 2018 European Championships in U23 in Villajoyosa, and 2016 Junior European Champion in Cagliari. Two times silver medallist at the World Championships in Junior event (2015, 2017) and second in U23 event of the World Championships in 2019.
 
 
PIERRE VILELLA (FRA) - U23 European Champion in 2021, silver medallist at European Championships in 2022 in Cagliari in the U23 event. Bronze medal from the 2018 European Championships in U23 event. Bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in the U23 event.
 
 
VICTOR DOUX (FRA) - Silver medallist of the U23 event at the 2014 European Championships.
