With Canoe Sprint finished time to look forward to Canoe Slalom excitement 26.6.2023

After intense four days of competition, the curtain came down on the Canoe Sprint programme at the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games. Over the course of four competitive days and 72 races, 282 athletes from 35 countries competed at Kryspinow Waterway for 16 sets of medals in seven events for men and women respectively and two mixed events.


The Danish star Emma Jorgensen won four medals: two golds (WK1 200, WK1 500) and two silver medals (WK2 500, XK2 200), making her the most successful athlete of this year’s edition.
 
 
Apart from Jorgensen another nine female paddlers won multiple medals in different disciplines, most notable being the Ukrainian Liudmyla Luzan who won two gold medals (WC1 500, WC2 500), and a silver (WC1 200). Three medals were also won by the Spaniard Maria Corbera (silver in WC1 500 and Wc2 500, bronze WC1 200). To the delight of the local fans Anna Pulawska and Karolina Naja won two gold medals (WK2 500, WK4 500). Antia Jacome from Spain won a gold and a silver (XC2 200, WC2 500), with Milica Novakovic (SRB), Alida Gazso (HUN), Lena Roehlings (GER) and Frederikke Matthiesen (DEN) all winning a silver and a bronze.
 
 
The men’s competition was definitely marked by Martin Fuksa (CZE). The Czech legend won his ninth consecutive gold medal in MC1 500 at the European championships making him one of the most successful canoeists of all time. A total of five male paddlers won multiple medals. Ukrainians Oleh Kukharyk and Ihor Trunov won a gold and a silver (MK2 500, MK4 500). The Spanish canoeist Pablo Grana won a gold (XC2 200) and a bronze (MC1 200). Aleksander Kitewski from Poland won a silver and a bronze (XC2 200, MC2 500) while Serbia’s Marko Dragosavljevic won two bronze medals in MK2 500 and MK1 500.
 
 
A total of 16 nations won medals this year at Kryspinow Waterway. The most successful nation being Ukraine with five medals: three gold and two silver medals. Poland also won five medals: three gold and a silver and a bronze. Spain won the most medals, but is in the third place with two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals. Five medals were also won by Denmark and Serbia, and one medal less was won by paddlers from Portugal and Germany.

The canoe enthusiasts have a few days to regain their strength to cheer for their favourites, since the Canoe Slalom competition will bring the best competitors from 29 nations to compete in ten events: four team and six individual events. The Canoe Slalom competition will take place at Kolna Sports Centre from June 29th till July 2nd.

European Games Krakow-Malopolska 2023 is the Europe’s biggest multidisciplinary sporting event in 2023. More than 7 thousand athletes are competing in 26 sports and 29 disciplines for 253 gold medals. More than that, European Games 2023 are part of the qualification process for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 in 19 sports. This great celebration of sports started on 21st of June. The closing ceremony will take place on July 2nd.
