Yuriy Cheban puts Olympic medals on auction

Yuriy Cheban puts Olympic medals on auction 4.12.2022

Yuriy Cheban, Ukraine's most decorated male Olympian, decided to auction his Olympic medals to support Ukraine’s war efforts amid the invasion by Russia.

The 36-year-old Yuriy Cheban posted on his Instagram profile a photo of his three Olympic medals: bronze from Beijing (MC1 500m) and two golds from London and Rio de Janeiro (MC1 200m) and announced he will auction these precious medals to support Ukraine.

“The real Olympic award is eternal glory and honour, the opportunity to forever engrave your name in the history of Ukrainian and world sports, the honour to carry this flag all your life,” wrote Cheban and added: “I have now decided to put my Olympic awards up for a charity auction. Some of my friends, and my mom, were against this move, but sure I'm doing the right thing, so tells me an Olympic heart. I understand that my act will not stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but it will provide an opportunity to at least a little help to those in need. And this is the activity of the Olympic Circle Charity Fund.”
