Yvonne Schuring ended her competitive canoe sprint career

Yvonne Schuring ended her competitive canoe sprint career 24.5.2018

International canoe sprint events at the highest level in the season 2018 started last week with World Cup race in Szeged, but there were some top athletes missing. Among them was Austrian sprinter Yvonne Schuring who decided to wave goodbye to competitive sport after winning medals at World Championships, World Cups and European Games.

At the age of 40 one of the best Austrian paddlers Yvonne Schuring decided to end her successful career. She won a medal at the inaugural European Games in 2015 in Baku, where she finished second in women’s K1 500 metres event. She was also a World Champion in 2011 in women’s K2 500 metres event together with Viktoria Schwarz and won a bronze medal a year before in the same event with the same teammate. She has 20 medals from World Cup events in her collection and 60 national champion titles. She finished London Olympics in 5th place, Beijing Olympics in 9th place and Rio Olympics in 11th place.

She was thinking of ending her career after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, but after some time the desire was too big and she started competing again. Last year we saw her racing at the European Championships in Plovdiv where she finished fifth in the 1000 metres event. This was actually the last major international race in her career as she suffered an injury which prevented her from competing at World Championships in Račice.

“Gold and bronze medal at World Championships were undoubtedly the highlight of my career. But I also remember the silver medal race at European Games in Baku. This was one of my best races. For me the most important thing was to go beyond myself or when my tactics worked out very well,” said Schuring who will focus now on her job. Leaving competitive sports however does not mean she will leave sports, “I will continue to train and do sports every day. Besides canoeing I can now try running or cross-country skiing or even try something new.”
