The organisers of the first races in the 2017 ECA Junior Canoe Slalom Cup series were forced to cancel the 2017 events in France due to the lack of water. Hardly any rain fell in Brittany since September which means the courses which were supposed to host around 180 young canoe slalom athletes do not offer good conditions for the organisation of the first ECA Junior Canoe Slalom Cup events this year.

Ljubomir Spasikj received an award for the best paddler of the year in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the previous season. Member of the canoeing club Gemidžii Veles used to compete both in canoe slalom as well as in wildwater canoeing but focused more on the wildwater canoeing recently. This did not come as a surprise since Skopje (MKD) will host the 2017 ECA Wildwater Canoeing European Championships in May and Spasikj wishes to perform well in front of a home crowd.

Read moreOne of the legends of canoe slalom – Italian Daniele Molmenti – decided to say goodbye to the competitive sport. 32-year-old Molmenti is one of the few canoe slalom paddlers in the history who won an individual gold medal at every major canoeing event – Olympic Games, European Championships and World Championships. He is, however, the only one who managed to achieve the titles in mens kayak, the others who also won the Olympic, World and European Champion titles are Štěpánka Hilgertová, Elena Kaliská (both K1W), Michal Martikán, Tony Estanguet (both C1M) and Pavol Hochschorner/Peter Hochschorner (C2M).
