Olympic champion Yurii Cheban shared his beginnings and 2016 Rio drama

The 2018 edition of the International Congress of Canoeing Coaches in Catoira, Spain, brought the seventh congress for canoe sprint coaches and the inaugural edition of the congress for canoe slalom coaches which was run simultaneousely. Around 300 atendees were able to hear experienced coaches and to end the day with a style also an Olympic champion Yurii Cheban from Ukraine.

Bronze medal for Javier Hernanz after sporting gesture of Eivind Vold

Spanish kayaker Javier Hernanz was awarded the bronze medal for his performance at the 2018 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Portugal. 35-year-old Asturian athlete competed in the 5000 metres event and finished fourth, but Norwegian kayaker Eivind Vold realized he made a mistake after the race, so he returned a medal and it was awarded now to Hernanz at a ceremony that took place in the headquarters of Spanish Olympic Committee.

The seventh edition of the International congress of canoeing coaches in Catoira, Spain, will bring many interesting presentations from canoe sprint experts coming from Spain, Hungary, Italy, Great Britain and Ukraine. Before attendees exchange knowledge we have checked what the future of canoe sprint might look like. We have talked with two-times Olympic medallist Martin Marinov who first competed for Bulgaria and then switched for Australia. He is now the ICF’s Canoe Sprint and Calmwater Technical Manager and therefore the one who was able to offer us a sneak peek where the sport might go in the following years.
