Teresa Portela and Fernando Pimenta the best in Portugal

Portuguese Canoe Federation celebrated the successes of athletes, clubs and federation on international and national level in the previous year. The gala evening was organised in Braga, the city in northwestern part of Portugal which is this year’s European city of sport. With many excellent results Portuguese athletes had in the previous year the task of selecting the best was not easy, but it was Fernando Pimenta who had an amazing season with European and World champion titles in his pocket and was named Portuguese kayaker of the year. Teresa Portela was named best female athlete of the year, the award for young hope went to the hands of Sérgio Maciel, while Hélio Lucas received an award for the best coach.

Celebration of European Canoeing at World Paddle Awards

Silkeborg hosted a unique event in paddle sports past weekend. The fourth edition of the canoeing ‘Oscars’ brought best of the best in the year 2017 to this outdoor capital of Denmark. European Canoeing had a lot of success in this edition of the awards - in the eight categories six award winners come from European countries. Peter Kauzer, Slovenian canoe slalom star, received an award for the sportsman of the year, young Czech wildwater paddler Barbora Dimovova was named best junior of the year, Finn Larsen from Denmark received a Livetime achievement award, Dennis Newton a Foundation award, organising team of the Canoe Slalom, Wildwater Sprint Canoeing and Extreme Canoe Slalom World Championships in Pau, France, received an award in the Industry professional category, while ECA’s media manager Nina Jelenc from Slovenia received a media professional award.

Inna Osypenko-Radomska returns to Ukraine

According to the reports of Azeri Sport multiple Olympic medallist, World and European Championships medallist, Inna Osypenko-Radomska is returning to Ukraine. 35-year-old canoe sprinter competed for Ukraine until she switched to Azerbaijan in 2014. Media in Azerbaijan now reports she expressed a wish to return to Ukraine and has already received a green light to do so.

Canoe Sprinters enjoyed the 2018 Nelo Winter Challenge

Well known boat manufacturer who celebrates 40th anniversary this year organised another edition of interesting event, so called Nelo Winter Challenge. Montebelo Aguieira Lake Resort, the largest of the Nelo Training Centres, hosted two races past weekend. Over 250 competitors took part in a 1500 metres race as well as in 150 metres race. In the time trial athletes started every minute and the winner was the fastest in each category. In the 150 metres race a knockout format was used to determine the finalists. Results of both races were then combined to get the overall winners in each category. The best in women’s kayak overall standings was Portugal’s Teresa Portela, Roi Rodriguez (ESP) was the winner in men’s kayak standings, Martin Fuksa (CZE) won men’s C1 event and Olesya Romasenko (RUS) won women’s C1 event.

Dariusz Popiela raises funds for a special memorial

Dariusz Popiela, Polish kayaker who won silver medal in men’s K1 individual event and bronze medal in men’s team event at last year's Canoe Slalom European Championships, is active also outside the competition arena and has become involved in a special project. Together with his friends he is raising money to restore the memory of the murdered Jews of Krościenko, a village in Southern Poland.
