Sad news comes from Slovakia where canoeing family mourns the death of Anton Zerer, a sports journalist and former president of the Slovak Canoe Slalom and Wildwater Federation. Anton Zerer (born in 1950) was a president of the federation between the years 2001 and 2002.

The 2000 metres time trial served as a qualifying event for the 5000 metres finals. In the record breaking edition of the championships with over 700 athletes from 114 clubs participating on the Guadalquivir River Maria Corbera, Begona Lazkano, Tono Campos and Javier Hernanz celebrated the Spanish Winter Champion titles. Elena Ayuso, Elena Naveiro, Juan Rodriguez Gonzalez, Juan Valle and Javier Reja celebrated wins in paracanoeing part of the competition.
