Sad news comes from Slovakia where canoeing family mourns the death of Anton Zerer, a sports journalist and former president of the Slovak Canoe Slalom and Wildwater Federation. Anton Zerer (born in 1950) was a president of the federation between the years 2001 and 2002.

Did you know that today, 22nd March, is the WORLD WATER DAY? It is an annual observance day to highlight the importance of freshwater. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events. We celebrate the 25th edition of World Water day this year – the first World Water Day was designated by the United Nations in 1993. This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.

Vice president of the German Canoe Federation in charge of the competitive sport Jens Perlwitz received a special award for his lifelong contribution to sport, a golden sport badge of the City of Kassel. This award is given to people for an outstanding contribution to the sporting life in the city of Kassel. It was stated that Jens Perlwitz has devoted over 40 years to canoeing with his heart and soul.

ECA's Board of Directors appointed a new technical delegate for Canoe Polo during their meeting in Madrid earlier this month. The task of shaping the future of canoe polo in European continent has been given to Italian Gianluca Zannoni, who was born in 1970 in Rome. Gianluca Zannoni has been involved with this sport for over 20 years and has gained rich experience. He has been international referee since 2004.

With everyone waiting for winter to finally wave goodbye and to welcome spring and summer in Europe, Spanish Seville hosted a special winter championships where paddlers compete in 2000 and 5000 metres events. The 2000 metres time trial served as a qualifying event for the 5000 metres finals. In the record breaking edition of the championships with over 700 athletes from 114 clubs participating on the Guadalquivir River Maria Corbera, Begona Lazkano, Tono Campos and Javier Hernanz celebrated the Spanish Winter Champion titles. Elena Ayuso, Elena Naveiro, Juan Rodriguez Gonzalez, Juan Valle and Javier Reja celebrated wins in paracanoeing part of the competition.
